Even kings cry...

My girlfriend bought me Dave Eggers' Wild Things for Christmas and I just started reading it. Man, Eggers really captures the spirit of this kid, Max. It's been a great read so far. I drew this image based on how I feel about Max. In his own mind, he's this mighty king but in the world that he lives in, he's just lost. Questions conflict him. He is wanting the attention he never gets, feeling misunderstood, wondering why people leave, and why some won't go away. In his world, he's a king but even kings cry.

Caught in a Webb

A lot of big entertainment happenings going on in the news. Like the whole Conan, Leno, NBC thing and this other thing, the Spiderman Re-boot.

They just announced that the new director of the franchise is going to be (500) Days of Summer helmer, Marc Webb. I'm not all for the reboot but I like (500) Days of Summer, haha. I did this drawing with some pen and sharpies. Well whatever they do with those movies...will they ever be as good as Spiderman 1, 2, and 3?........(oh wait.)

Tank Girl!

I like this Tank Girl sketch so much I decided to lay some quick colors on it. I think the "rough look"gives it a lot of personality which if you've read the comics, Tank Girl's got plenty haha. I kept the colors loose and the lines even looser. I think if I cleaned it up and did a more finished properly inked piece, it wouldn't pop out as much. Less is more with this one and I think it pays off.

Ladies in red...

I had a bit of fun with some ballpoint pen today. I had girls on the mind today...not any in particular, I just felt like drawing a bunch of chicks and because I stumbled upon Cameron Stewart's art blog today. And maaaaaaan I drool over his talent. He has a blog segment called Girl Friday and some of the pin-ups he does are fantastic! Check him out! So he was my source of inspiration for these sketches today:

like an evil genius! MUAHAHAHAHA ahhh ahh ah. *ahem. So I''ve been cooking up some ideas for a new book project and a new art blog that would tie into my children's book....a spin-off project I guess you could say. But I can't really start anything new if I haven't finished what I started. So let's get crackin'!

I watched Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs yesterday with commentary. Man that movie rocks socks!!

The Shredder

Leonardo: Can anyone tell me who or what *this* is?
Michaelangelo: Don't know, but I bet it never has to look for a can-opener.

I felt like drawing The Shredder today, man I love me some TMNT.

And my favorite Shredder line: Ah! The rat! So it has a name... It had a name.

District 9

Tonight's movie. I find it funny that both times I've watched this movie I've been eating. If you've seen it, clearly you know its not a movie to watch while you're shoving food in your mouth.

Another warm up I did today. Drawn with black pen and then added some texture and shade with a 2H pencil.

Are you gettin'all this Smallville?

A quick warm up sketch for today. Did I ever mention how much of a Supes fan I am? CK is doing something I should do, taking notes. Well come to think of it, I make "to do lists"all the time. Do I actually finish them? That's something of a resolution for 2010 and beyond.

We're in a band...

So I drew on cardboard again. I did these warm ups during my last hour of work. Aside from When You Were Little (currently in production) I haven't done any real sketching in a while. And if I have, it usually ends up being a fan art piece. As much as I rag on fan art sadly that's all I've been doing lately (cause its fun! call me hypocrite! haha) but I did say I wanted to post some more art this year. Since I haven't done it in a while these first couple warm ups aren't going to be anything amazing. I think thats why they are warm ups because I'm slowly getting back into my drawing now that the holiday season is over.

I also want to start doing random rough stuff in SketchBook Pro so be on the look out for that. I was thinking of devoting an entire week to a warm up sketch done entirely in SketchBook Pro so that I can get used to its brush tools and other aspects of the program. I might start that next week maybe devote some time in the morning before work to doing 20-30 minutes of a piece and see where it ends up by the end of the week.

Well that's all for now, any thoughts on a subject for next week's SketchBook Pro exercise? (who am I kidding, no one reads this haha)

Super me!

Hello! I hope everyone had a good new year, I know I did. Good family, good friends, good food, and good times! Anyway new year; I figure it's time for a new blog header. At first, I wanted to showcase all my best work from 2009 in this collage type thing, but then I had this image in my head.

I had to draw it.

And it's all because my super awesome girlfriend bought me this Superman "cape" hoody for Christmas. Now I've worn it a bunch (with the cape on) and not for nothing but it makes me feel like a kid again. Yeah I know that sounds absurd. All sense of worry from "adult" life goes away for a brief moment and I feel like having fun. And when I draw, I get that same feeling. I have fun. I play.

And just like that, I found a design for my blog header. It's simple, fun, and a great positive outlook for 2010..."play".

So that was the idea behind my new blog header and I hope to consistently post more art this year as well. I have some ideas for web comics and things like that...but one project at a time. I'm still working on When You Were Little, which should be out by the end of this winter so keep your eyes out for that.

Anyways, I hope you like the drawing.

I mean I could have easily put up a picture of me zipping around in my cape-hoody but why would I ever take a picture like that? That's just silly!

I haven't seen Avatar...

...but a coworker found a piece of cardboard paper at work and asked me to draw one of those blue alien thingies. So with a combination of sharpie, blue ballpoint, hi-liters, and white out, I cooked up this little number. I brought it home and scanned it before I give it to her on Monday. This was a nice way to spend a Thursday afternoon at work.

Happy 2010 yo!

My Top 10 films of 2009

I had a great year and a small part of that was due to the number of films I've seen in the theaters. Anyone who knows me knows I love going to the movies. So now that the holidays are over and I'm settling in to 2010, I've finally taken the time to come up with a list of films that to me deserve a spot on the top 10. So here...we...go:

10. (Tie) I Love You, Man and The Hangover: So I honestly could not pick between these two comedies so I thought that they should share the number ten spot. Both hilarious...even after multiple viewings.

9. Taken: Probably the best action film of the year.

8. Inglourious Basterds: Quentin does it again!

7. District 9: One of the more unique films I've seen this year.

6. Star Trek: J.J. Abrams' Reboot/Prequel/Sequel took a franchise that was geared towards the most hardcore fans of science fiction fantasy and made it into a film anyone can enjoy!

5. Up In The Air: Jason Reitman makes wonderful movies.

4. (500) Days Of Summer: A guy's version of a romantic comedy that carried a film spirit of John Hughes. Very funny, very romantic, very honest, and very bittersweet.

3. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: Hilarious and wonderfully animated. Mr. T lends his voice talents and it pretty much makes the whole film for me.

2. Where the Wild Things Are: There's something about this film that makes me want to relive my childhood over and over again.

1. UP: My favorite film of 2009. Heartfelt and touching. Where the Wild Things Are makes me want to relive my childhood adventures, UP gives me the feeling that its okay to be a grown up and have adventures too.

Well I usually go on and on about how wonderful this movies are and really dissect them but I figured if you were really curious about them, you can read more "legit" movie reviews. Annnnd I'm not at all surprised that my top three are kid related pictures.

There are two films I did miss that I really wanted to see, Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Hurt Locker. I'll probably catch them come awards season.

Well here's to more great films in 2010!
